"Shake tile", also called "Beaver Tail" are some of the oldest
forms of traditional tiles.
They come in the widest range of different
combinations in shapes, sizes, surface characteristics and colors.
The shapes are ranging from curved "bottoms" to straight to "V
shaped". Sizes depend on the roof surface they are to be laid on.
Beaver
tail tiles are ideal for covering conical roofs like turrets. They can even
be custom made with conical sides and grooving to fit like a glove onto designed
turret roofs. For this reason they are chosen to go onto turrets while using
"regular" tiles on the main roof.
Surfaces can be natural, engobed,
glazed, scratched (to look like wood shakes) and imprinted with patterns. The
available colors and shapes are countless. In Europe traditional roofs show
pattern created using different colors.
